Radiographic assessment of the pelvis is an essential part of the initial evaluation of trauma patients. In addition to an AP radiograph, 40-degree caudal (inlet) and 40-degree cephalad (outlet) views are obtained. The caudal/inlet view is useful for detecting the integrity of the pelvic ring because it shows the sacroiliac joints and the sacrum, which can help detect either sacroiliac dislocations or sacral fractures and their displacement in the anterior-posterior plane.
