Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a naturally occurring bile acid that is used primarily to treat gallstones and certain liver diseases. Its main application is in the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones that are too small or too numerous to be removed surgically. UDCA works by reducing the cholesterol saturation of bile, which promotes the gradual dissolution of these stones. It is particularly effective for gallstones that are radiolucent (not visible on X-ray) and when the gallbladder is still functioning.
Beyond gallstone dissolution, UDCA is a cornerstone therapy for primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune disease that causes progressive destruction of the bile ducts in the liver. UDCA helps to improve liver function, reduce inflammation, and slow the progression of liver damage in PBC patients. It is also used in other cholestatic liver conditions, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and cystic fibrosis-associated liver disease. While generally safe, common side effects can include diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal discomfort. Long-term use is typically well-tolerated.
