Simvastatin belongs to the class of medications known as statins. It works by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, which plays a central role in the production of cholesterol in the liver. By lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides while slightly increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, it helps prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries, thereby reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular complications in patients with high cholesterol or existing heart disease.
Patients prescribed simvastatin should be aware of potential side effects, the most notable being muscle pain or weakness (myopathy), which in rare cases can lead to serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis). It is essential to avoid consuming large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking this medication, as it can increase the concentration of the drug in the bloodstream. Patients should report any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or dark-colored urine to their healthcare provider immediately.
