This mechanism improves blood flow to the heart muscle, effectively preventing the chest pain associated with coronary artery disease.

Patients should be aware that this medication is not intended for the immediate relief of acute angina attacks; sublingual nitroglycerin should be used for that purpose. Common side effects include headache, which is often a sign of the drug's therapeutic activity, as well as dizziness, hypotension, and flushing. It is crucial to maintain a consistent dosing schedule to prevent the development of nitrate tolerance, which can diminish the drug's efficacy over time.
