Cefasyn 500 contains Cefuroxime (as axetil), a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In general and orthopedic clinics, it is frequently prescribed for treating mild-to-moderate infections such as acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and early Lyme disease. In orthopedic settings, it may also be utilized for the treatment or prophylaxis of bone and joint infections caused by susceptible organisms, ensuring effective eradication of pathogens.

The mechanism of action of Cefuroxime involves binding to essential penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, thereby inhibiting cell wall synthesis and leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. While generally well-tolerated, common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain. Patients should be monitored for hypersensitivity reactions (ranging from mild skin rashes to severe anaphylaxis), especially those with a known history of penicillin allergy, as well as the potential risk of Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) with prolonged use.
