Carvedilol is a potent cardiovascular medication classified as a non-selective beta-blocker with alpha-1 adrenergic blocking properties. It is primarily indicated for the management of chronic heart failure, left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction, and hypertension. By blocking both beta-1, beta-2, and alpha-1 receptors, it reduces heart rate, decreases systemic vascular resistance, and lowers blood pressure, which collectively reduces the workload on the heart and improves long-term survival in patients with heart failure.
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, bradycardia, and hypotension. Because of its alpha-blocking activity, patients may experience orthostatic hypotension, especially when initiating therapy or increasing the dose. It is clinically recommended to take Carvedilol with food to slow its absorption, thereby reducing the risk of sudden drops in blood pressure.
